Thesis 15: The Spirit of Rebellion in The End Times Church

The Spirit of Rebellion: What Is It?

Yesterday morning, I decided to appoint a leader in one of our Kenyan congregations. I established this man in leadership based on what Jesus Christ told me to do. Everything seemed fine and people seemed accepting. However, this morning, I woke up with a message from another angry Kenyan, who was saying the man was a scammer, and that he should not be a leader.

Now, luckily, I am talking to God a lot, and Jesus told me that this man accusing the other was rebelling against the authority established. To note, the man I chose to lead has shown he is credible by his fruits, and I am fully confident in him. I barely had to investigate because the claim was so audacious. However, upon investigation, I found the claims were false.

What had happened? Certainly there was a spirit of envy or jealousy, which I subdued. I assured the man that he was still a leader in my church and not to fear or envy the new leader. However, there was something deeper there - there was something that took place in the night while I was sleeping trying to disrupt our ministry.

Last night, I had a synchronous dream. In this dream, I was hanging out with an old friend of mine. No matter what the situation, she just could not find the ability to be kind or good. There were many good things happening around her, and she had much to be appreciative of, but everything that was sent her way, even the good - she rebelled against it. I woke up with the message, "There is a spirit of rebellion amongst all the people of this world."

Going back to the leadership issue, I simply told the accuser, "Unify or get out." He listened. I told him that we were working against this evil spirit of rebellion in Kenya, and that is exactly what his accusatory actions exemplified. It was more than just envy or jealousy. It was a rebellion against what God had established in our ministry.

First, let's turn to Scripture to define this spirit of rebellion, and then, let's break it down into some parts.

According to Scripture, rebellion is a sin of witchcraft, stubbornness, iniquity, and idolatry.

1 Samuel 15:23 For rebellion 4805 [is as] the sin 2403 of witchcraft 7081, and stubbornness 6484 8687 [is as] iniquity 205 and idolatry 8655. Because thou hast rejected 3988 8804 the word 1697 of the LORD 3068, he hath also rejected 3988 8799 thee from [being] king 4428.(witchcraft: Heb. divination)

So now, let us break down each of these categories and ensure that we are not working with a spirit of rebellion. In fact, you can just say this pray, "Lord I cast out any spirit of rebellion in me in Jesus's name."

The Spirit of Rebellion and Witchcraft

In the picture above, we see rocks with a generally smooth surface, and then we see some pretty yellow buds growing from a plant in a crevasse. At first glance, these plant looks nice, but in reality they have tiny thorns, and they are deceptive to all creatures around. This plant is creating a larger and larger crack that could eventually split the rock. This is how rebellion works - subtle at first, but divisive and dangerous in the ministry.

Again, this is how the spirit of rebellion operates. It looks good. It may even feel good; however, upon closer inspection, it is creating chaos and havoc everywhere around it.

Rebellion is a form of witchcraft, which makes people believe a lie is the truth and a truth is a lie. In the following sermon I listened to on the topic before writing this post, David Wilkerson says that this spirit "eases people." It makes them feel good about their sins:

I highly recommend listening to this sermon, but let me summarize one key point for you.

He says that the prophets should rattle and unsettle people. They should never ease people. A prophet that is easing people has a spirit of rebellion, and this spirit of rebellion can be poured out upon its listeners.

Like all prophets in the Bible, the true ones cause fear, sometimes anger, and even repentance.

That is how I know I am a true prophet of God. What I say to people is never easy, but it makes people turn away from sin. For example, I have led hundreds, even thousands at this point, to repentance. How would this be possible if I was operating under a false spirit? Joel Osteen, for example, may baptize people, but he never leads them to true repentance.

A false prophet will itch ears and comfort. True prophets will push people to eliminate sin and come to righteousness.

This leads to my next point, about the spirit of rebellion in regards to sin.

The Spirit of Rebellion and Stubbornness

A person who is stubborn cannot reflect on their sins because stubbornness is a form of pride. In the sermon above, David Wilkerson says that even if you live a life of 98% obedience to Lord, if the other 2% is off, then you are still in disobedience.

Suppose, for example, you are do everything God wants except you drink too much. You give to the poor, you help others, and you work hard for God. However, you still drink too much. This is still rebellion to the Lord, even if some facets of you are good. This used to be me, by the way.

I was in rebellion to the Lord, and I was stubborn regarding my sins. I tried to find a way, a stubborn way, to have my life of obedience and disobedience in Jesus co-exist, but it could not. I was disciplined and humbled thoroughly.

A stubborn (prideful) person refuses to self-reflect, and more than that, they refuse to hear the call of the prophets. As a prophet of God, I am telling readers you cannot negotiate with sin. In my next thesis, I will write more about how people are trying to negotiate with sin.

In the meantime, another note on this part is that you can have all the sacrifice in the world, but if you do not have righteousness, it means nothing to God. In fact, that was the main problem with the Jews in the Old Testament. They may have followed the sacrificial procedures, but they were not righteous before His eyes. Proverbs 21:3 says:

To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.

A stubborn person will do anything to avoid righteousness. They will do everything they can to twist Scripture to justify their sins, and they will refuse to hear God's call.

The Spirit of Rebellion and Iniquity

It is important to understand what iniquity is first. Most readers understand sin is a violation of God's commandments or in more simple terms, missing His goals, but iniquity is deeper than that. According to this source:

The Hebrew word avon is another word for sin, but with a different nuance. We also translate it as “iniquity,” which adds another dimension to our understanding.

The biblical authors use avon to describe a twisted or crooked road (e.g., Lam. 3:9

Lamentations 3:9 Loading...Keep Reading) or a malformed back that’s bent out of shape (e.g., Ps. 38:6 Psalms 38:6Loading...Keep Reading). Isaiah uses avon to mean “dazed and confused” (Isa. 21:3 Isaiah 21:3Loading...Keep Reading). Avon is about distorting what was otherwise beautiful and good, and the authors use it to refer to behavior like murder or adultery. Other examples of this type of twisted behavior include deceitfulness, broken faith, violence, and other kinds of harm.

Avon also refers to the crooked results and consequences—the suffering people, shattered relationships, and cycles of retaliation that come from this behavior. When we are abused and taken advantage of, we are experiencing avon, iniquity—sin.

The choice to sin often begins with an urge to look out for “me, myself, and I” and ignore our human purpose, which is to care for others as we care for ourselves, to love one another as God loves. When we ignore or diminish others to become self-serving, we allow the deadly croucher to rule over us. We become bent, crooked, and bring harm to others and ourselves.

Page after page in Scripture, we see people missing the mark or distorting the good, and they either don’t know what they’re doing or, worse, believe they’re doing good. Sometimes we strongly believe we’re doing good when we aren’t. Other times, we honestly just don’t know that we’re missing the goal. With the best intentions, we can unintentionally do the bent and crooked thing. Thankfully, God responds with mercy, guidance, and a forgiveness that will ultimately heal each of us and the consequences of our sin.

Iniquity is about twisting things, distorting truth, and following a crooked path, and often, it brings harm to others.

In fact, we may not often see how our iniquity affects others. Sometimes iniquity isn't about how it harms you but how it harms those around you. If you are participating in behaviors that cause another to stumble, even if they are not sin, you should forsake those behaviors. These behaviors may cause rebellion in others around you. Is it a sin to smoke cigarettes? Maybe not. Could it cause a brother to stumble? Possibly.

Further, it isn't always about if it is a sin or not. It is about if we are leading a holy life, and it is about if others see us as a model of righteousness. In the end times, righteousness will appear severe and even insane to those around us - the wicked.

The Spirit of Rebellion and Idolatry

Many reading have idols, and they will do anything to claim these things are not idols. God hates idolatry, and most reading still have idols. The idol, I think first and foremost, is love of the world.

An idol can be anything. It can be your friends, family, opinions of others, marijuana, alcohol, pills, video games, sex, pornography, make-up, attention, yourself, and so on. One can make a god out of anything.

People laugh and say, "I don't have any idols", but Revelation says differently:

20 The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands nor give up worshiping demons and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk,

If you are not sure what your idols are, just say this prayer: Lord, please reveal to me my idols in Jesus's name.

Conquering The Spirit of Rebellion

So, then, how do we conquer rebellion? Well, of course, we must cast out the things mentioned in this post, but there is something deeper than that.

Rebellion is about going against authority. Well, who is our authority? Our authority is Jesus Christ and the Bible - the true Word of God.

God does send and appoint authorities, as well, and one of the authorities he sends is prophets. Now, of course, one has to discern who are the true and false prophets. However, when people are sin and iniquity, this is difficult. People who are sinning or walking a crooked path do not often have "eyes to see or ears to hear" who the true prophets are, and they often listen to prophets who tell them what they want to hear.

As mentioned at the beginning of this post, the true prophets will push you. They will make you self-reflect. They will even make you convicted. The true prophets will get you out of your comfort zone, and they will proclaim righteousness.

I declare Witness 1 and I are appointed and chosen by God to deliver these sometimes harsh messages; hence why we are not, at this time, super popular or well-received. However, something is changing, and much discipline is coming upon the world. As people are shaken out of their comforts, they will be better able to see the truth of our words.

To conquer the spirit of rebellion, one must accept those sent into their lives that were sent by God. One must accept the true messengers of God in these end times, and I believe Witness 1 and I will be the last true ones standing soon.

The spirit of rebellion is deception. Remember, it even got one-third of angels in Heaven to fall! It feels good, it looks good, and it even sounds good. It is why we see people normalizing LGBT behaviors in the churches, and how the pastor committing adultery goes unpunished. It is how people twist the Scripture to say everything is love and grace with no obedience or discipline. It is about twisting the truth to suit an agenda of comfort and ease.

The truth is rarely comfortable or easy, and that is why the path is narrow.

A spirit against rebellion requires humility. It requires one to come before God and go, "Alright, God, what do you want me to change or give up, even if it is difficult?"

To fight the spirit of rebellion (Satan), one must decide to pick up that cross and carry it around with them, all day, every day. It's hard to rebel when you are carrying a cross, after all.

Remember, Satan was the first rebel against the authority of God, and now, in these end times, there are many rebels convinced that they are following Jesus, but they are simply following Satan's paths.
